And when Our Verses are recited to them as clear evidences,

And when Our Verses are recited to them as clear evidences,

those who disbelieve (the rich and strong among the pagans of Quraish who live a life of luxury)

say to those who believe,

"Which of (the) two parties (i.e., believers or disbelievers) is best in position and best in association (as regards to station, place of council for consultation)?

— And how many a generation (past nations) have We destroyed before them, who were better in wealth, goods and outward appearance? —

Say (in reply to them), "Whoever is in error - the Most Merciful will verily prolong his span of life (extend for him an extension in wealth and time to increase in sins and atrocities)

until when they see that which they were promised (whichever comes first), either,

- torment (in this world)

or

- the Hour (the Doom)

they will (then) come to know (the truth and) who is (really) worst in position and weaker in forces (soldiers, army, supporters).
